Where in the World is GLP?

Dialogue Education Practitioners Around the Globe

GLP Around the Globe

Niagara Falls, NY – Jane Vella is working with the Niagara University's professional development team on their 8th Annual CCTL Conference entitled Learning, Teaching, and Engagement to be held January 8-9, 2009.  Jane will offer the keynote and closing session and a workshop.

Denver, CO – Darlene Goetzman, presented a workshop entitled "Attitudes are Caught, not Taught" at the AAACE Conference in November. Several hundred people attended the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education's annual conference, including professors, teachers, grad students and trainers from business, academia, corrections and not-for-profit organizations. Focusing on this year's theme, Creating Your Future Within Our Future, workgroups identified key opportunities within the expanding population of persons needing and interested in adult learning and education opportunities. Hot issues included technology and the burgeoning numbers of youth dropping out of school.

Darlene, a GLP Partner, has also been working on several other interesting projects:  A redesign of extensive curriculum for families and persons who are diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease or another type of dementia (Ontario, Canada); coaching and co-designing a Training of Trainers event that included the introduction of nutrition education modules that participants could customize for use back in their agencies (Washington); and development of a Trainer's Resource Guide that provides a step by step process for designing and is a resource for ideas, trouble shooting and ways to deepen the practice of designing learning events.

New York, NY – GLP Partner, Valerie Uccellani is part of a long-term collaboration between GLP and Credit Where Credit is Due (CWCID), a New York city-based non–profit devoted to raising the financial stability and long-term security of local residents. CWCID services for the community include: a multi-session course in Personal Finances, personalized financial counseling, a set of affordable financial products at their Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, and long-term support for members. GLP and CWCID are creating a new, learner-centered approach to their Personal Finance course and seminars. These learning opportunities allow participants to take an honest, and informed, look at their past and present financial realities, tap into affordable products, and begin to tip the financial seesaw which entraps so many low–income families into cycles of poverty.

Valerie and GLP Partner Peter Perkins, recently completed a series of tailored courses for the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division.  Read about Val's work with AAFRI in Malawi in this issue.

Des Moines, IA – On an annual basis The Iowa Department of Education organizes professional development training for groups of volunteer trainers across the country who facilitate workshops in public and private schools around the issues of sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, sexuality, and HIV prevention. Although each state offers courses and information packets to teachers and administrators of middle and high school levels, it is increasingly critical that trainers learn more about how to maximize learning with adult learners. The Iowa Department of Education wants to strengthen the skills and knowledge of their trainers so the workshops will be more effective in empowering teachers to teach their youth about their own sexuality. Transformative teaching will help ensure American schools don’t become a breeding place for the AIDS epidemic.  Jeanette Romkema, GLP Partner, was invited to teach an introduction to Dialogue Education™ and adult learning theory to assist in reaching this goal. Although many trainers are also full time elementary, middle or high school teachers, few have training in teaching adults and facilitating workshops. They wanted to know the differences and similarities between teaching adults and teaching children, so that they can confidently plan and teach this new audience. They also wanted to learn principles and practices of Dialogue Education™ so they can maximize learning and guarantee impact with the young people their learners teach.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – GLP Partner Peter Noteboom designed and facilitated a series of meetings hosted by the Integral Alliance (based in London, England) from October 20-24, 2008. The meetings brought together relief and development agencies from Europe and North America and Ethiopian partner churches and development agencies to build a stronger platform for common action on HIV & AIDS, advocacy, and food security. This was the fourth in a series of facilitated meetings over a period of 2 ½ years where GLP was invited to design a learning and negotiation process leading to deeper friendships, a more sophisticated understanding of the causes of poverty, strengthening a common commitment to end poverty, and a series of program interventions to bring about long-term, sustainable change.

Peter also facilitated a meeting of HIV&AIDS educators to share recent learning and innovations in Ethiopia with tear netherlands and Tearfund UK in October. PATH Thailand; Click for larger view

Bangkok, Thailand – Peter Noteboom and Karen Ridout engaged 65 energetic, enthusiastic and gracious colleagues of PATH Thailand in three Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach and Advanced Learning Design courses in Bangkok in November. Results included a completely redesigned sexual education curriculum that PATH Thailand, through the Thailand Ministry of Education, is using to trainPATH Thailand; Click for larger view teachers in Dialogue Education™ to educate 12 to 24 year olds about sexual responsibility.

ANFEAE Wins the UNESCO International Literacy Prize!

We want to congratulate Adult and Non-formal Education Association in Ethiopia (ANFEAE) on winning one of the four UNESCO International Literacy Prizes this year. Beside a wide variety of education, curriculum design and issue-based teaching, ANFEAE helps to organize courses in Dialogue Education™ across Ethiopia through Global Learning Partners.  For this reason, we feel a special pride in this award as well!

“One of the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy is awarded to the Adult and Non-Formal Education Association in Ethiopia (ANFEAE) programme, ‘Literacy Plus’ (Ethiopia), which exceeds simple literacy for rural women. Outstanding in its community-based approach to teaching business, conflict resolution and disease prevention, and for its writing workshops for the newly literate, it provides a model of innovation and self-sustainability.” ANFEAE excels in this work.

ANFEAE considers this prize as an encouragement to what the country is doing to promote adult literacy. Join GLP and others in congratulating them in all the good work they do!

For more information on the work of ANFEAE, please contact Alemayehu Gebre, Director:ANFEAE alemh40@yahoo.com.
