Applying the Principles in California

by Diane Bray ~ California Public Health

I gave my first class yesterday using the Seven Principles of Design! The main new bits for me are the achievement-based objectives and trying to include some psychomotor tasks. I figure I spent 6 hours prep time for a 1-hr presentation, in spite of hearing your voice saying, "Don't try to perfect it. Just follow the design, trust it, and field test it." I did some very bad teacher things I don't usually do; it's a good thing I have a good relationship with my co-workers, who were the learners. People laughed, were engaged, practiced the skills I was teaching, and didn't fall asleep. Next time, I want to tighten up my open questions (mine went way off track and I didn't recover very gracefully) and PUT THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE TASKS IN WRITING! ON THE WALL! Anyway, yippee, I gave it a try and learned something for next time.
