Too Much ____ for the ____ Game

by Dwayne Hodgson
GLP International Programs Director

Adriano’s Flash Training Design Cards at the Dialogue Education Institute Conference inspired me to think of another Dialogue Education Card Game. Ever wonder what to do when you’re waiting for your flight and all you have with you are your Seven Steps of Design cards? If so, you’re really a dialogue education geek. But anyhow, try this game out:

  1. Shuffle your cards. Turn them face down. Turn up 2 cards at a time and place them in the blanks of the following sentence:

If there is Too Much _____ for the _____ it means that…

For example, one that we’re all familiar with as designers and facilitators:

If I have Too Much WHAT for the WHEN… it means that I have too much content for the time available and the learning process gets rushed, the learners are overwhelmed.

Or if there is Too Much WHO for the WHERE it means that I have way too many learners for the size of the room provided.

Or if there is Too Much HOW for the WHO it suggests that the process is too thorough or too participatory for that particular group of learners.

  2. Repeat 1) using each of the possible 42 combinations…or until your flight is called. If anyone asks them what you’re doing, sell them a course!

  3. For added fun and learning, place your cards, identify the scenario and then suggest a way that you could change the design and/or facilitation to address the problem.

For example, Too Much WHO for the WHERE could be addressed by changing the layout of the room, or having small groups work outside or go for a walk.

Too Much WHY for the WHAT
-- a situation common in organizations where there are a lot of competing agendas for the learning event – can be addressed by doing a good LNRA and reviewing the purpose of the event with the sponsors beforehand, and then making clear what is possible for that event.
