SURE-Fire Meetings

This workshop applies the principles and practices of Dialogue Education to the design, facilitation and evaluation of business meetings. SURE-Fire Meetings will help you make the most of your time together, transforming time-consuming meetings to productive opportunities for mutual learning and decision making.

WHO? the intended participants for this workshop
Anyone involved in organizing, designing and/or facilitating meetings. Between 6-16 participants may complete the course each session.

Global Learning Partners helps individuals and organizations improve the effectiveness of their learning programs through a structured and participatory approach to learning design and facilitation called Dialogue Education.

WHY? the situation that calls for the learning event
Meetings are a key activity for every organization. Yet too often we hear people complaining that meetings are "boring," "unproductive," or even "a waste of time and money!" But we believe that the time, energy and money that we invest in meetings is too valuable to waste.

SURE-Fire Meetings applies the principles and practices of the Dialogue Education approach to learning design and facilitation to creating participatory and effective business meetings. It is based on the premise that meetings should be opportunities for individual and collective learning. By drawing on the principles of how adults learn, you will discover how to create an atmosphere of Safety and Respect, and opportunities for meaningful participation and engagement on the part of everyone present. You will learn how your colleagues can make clear decisions that everyone will support, and to evaluate the process and results of your meetings.

WHEN & WHERE is the course offered?
This is being offered as a 2-day course, but we are happy to adapt it to shorter or longer timeframes as requested.

WHAT are the learning objectives of the course?
This course is based upon the field research and teaching of Dr. Jane Vella and the collective experience of Global Learning Partners' network of experienced associates. By the end of the workshop, the participants will have:

  • Explored the SURE-fire elements of the learning-centered approach to meetings
  • Identified and practiced using the three phases of meetings
  • Identified the steps needed to prepare for a meeting
  • Reviewed and practiced using a meeting preparation template based on Global Learning Partners' Seven Steps of Design process
  • Identified ways to make meetings more engaging for the participants
  • Incorporated different styles of information processing into your meeting design
  • Reviewed ways to get input from meeting participants and planned how to use them in a meeting
  • Examined various levels of decisions made in meetings and how to address these in the meeting
  • Chosen the best model of decision-making (Roberts Rules, Formal Consensus) for your organization
  • Rated your skills in four vital group facilitation skills
  • Reviewed and practiced methods to evaluate and follow-up meetings
  • Synthesized your learning in the course
  • Predicted what learning you will transfer into your organization

Note: The final list of objectives is always adapted to the specific needs of the organization and the participants.

HOW? the approach of the course
All of Global Learning Partners' courses are designed according to the principles and practices of Dialogue Education, an innovative synthesis of key adult education theories that provides a structured and accountable framework for participatory learning.

Each workshop is customized based on the findings of a pre-workshop Learning Needs and Resources Assessment that the facilitators conduct with each workshop participant.
