The Art of Facilitation

With careful attention to how adults learn, this in-depth, 2-day course will assist you if you are a trainer, teacher and facilitator with the necessary skills and knowledge to better equip you to create effective, engaging and relevant learning events and meetings. For this reason, this course focuses on the planning and act of facilitating, and not the act of designing courses or workshops. More specifically, this course was designed for you if you are using dialogue-based or participatory learning events and are looking for the facilitation skills to ensure learning and maximize the desired change.

Who Should Attend?
If you are a teacher, trainer, facilitator or instructor who delivers pre-designed learning events, or a leader and facilitator who conduct meetings, The Art of Facilitation was designed for you. If you are interested in honing your facilitation skills and growing in confidence as a facilitator, sign up today.  (This course also counts towards filling the requirements for becoming a GLP Certified Dialogue Education Practitioner.)

Why Should You Attend?
The Art of Facilitation provides an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of how adults learn and incorporate that knowledge into effective facilitation skills, then use those skills to ensure productive, meaningful and relevant learning events.

Learning Objectives
This workshop is based on the field research and teaching found in Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach  (Jossey-Bass, 2002) and Taking Learning to Task (Jossey-Bass, 2000), both by Dr. Jane Vella.

By the end of the workshop you will have:

bullet

Assessed what enhances and distracts from effective facilitating

bullet

Analyzed, practiced and assessed principles of adult learning

bullet Role played how to facilitate with effective waiting, weaving, affirming and summarizing
bullet

Practiced using open questions and created questions for digging deeper

bullet

Practiced using the content learned in this workshop and offered feedback to others

bullet

Devised strategies for minimizing resistance and planning for it

bullet

Used the steps of planning to plan a short workshop

bullet Practiced using purposeful energizers
bullet

Named the exact uses for a variety of visuals

bullet Practiced using a learning needs and resources assessment
bullet Written an action plan for improving your facilitation

How Will the Workshop be Taught?
During the workshop, the facilitators will model and teach the Principles and Practices of Dialogue Education™ through a series of Learning Tasks that stress accountability, relevance, and employ the knowledge that you are learning. Participants will work through a range of large group, small group and individual exercises that are engaging and creative, all within a workshop design that provides a structure for participation and observable results.
