Advanced Learning Design:

Taking Learning to Task

This rigorous 3-day course builds upon the Principles and Practices of Dialogue Education™ introduced in Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach  to provide an in-depth look at designing successful learning events. Your own design is the center of this course, as it is analyzed, dissected, reconstructed, and then taught in part to other course participants for practice and feedback. This demanding process leads to increased knowledge, skills and confidence in designing learning-based curriculum and facilitating learning events.

Who Should Attend?
This workshop is for graduates of Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach who have applied their learning to their work and would now like to enhance their understanding and skills in using the Dialogue Education™ approach.  This course is also the second step in the GLP Certified Dialogue Education™ Practitioner (CDEP) Series.

Why Should You Attend?
Advanced Learning Design provides an opportunity to delve deeply into the technical aspects of curriculum design, communication and learning styles. It is ideal for improving a current training design or for creating a new learning program. You will also benefit from reflecting on the designs of other participants and discussing how you can make learning more participatory, accountable and engaging.

When and Where is the workshop offered?
Public workshops are offered throughout North America on a regular basis. Please see our Schedule & Registration page for the next session nearest you. Global Learning Partners can also arrange customized in-house workshops for the staff, board members and volunteers of an organization anywhere in the world. Please contact us for a quotation.

What are the content and the learning objectives for the workshop?
This workshop is based on the field research and teaching found in Training through Dialogue (Jossey-Bass, 1996) and Taking Learning to Task (Jossey-Bass, 2000), both by Dr. Jane Vella.

By the end of the workshop you will have:

bullet activated your prior learning about designing for dialogue
bullet reviewed the Seven Steps of Design
bullet named the content for your design
bullet written Achievement-based Objectives for your design
bullet examined the power of verbs
bullet participated in three strong closings
bullet refreshed your awareness of learning styles
bullet analyzed the 4-I task design model
bullet designed learning tasks
bullet appraised ways to be "learning-centered" in a one-on-one session
bullet included partner interactions in learning tasks
bullet reconsidered ways to incorporate cognitive, affective, & psychomotor
bullet suggested uses for graphic organizers
bullet critiqued designs
bullet rated your facilitation skills
bullet created ways to address Tough Situation
bullet decided what you learned
bullet created a group collage
bullet determined how you will transfer your knowledge and skills

How will the workshop be taught?
During the workshop, the facilitators will model and teach the Principles and Practices of Dialogue Education™ through a series of Learning Tasks that stress accountability, relevance and employ the knowledge that you are learning. Participants will work through a range of large group, small group and individual exercises that are engaging and creative, all within a workshop design that provides a structure for participation and observable results.

"I completely redesigned a one-day training… and delivered it a week after we finished the course...
I was astonished at how busy people were throughout the day and their level of engagement."
